A Whirl Around Wurzburg

Lucy Bexfield, Senior Sales Consultant at our Norwich travel agents in store at Jarrolds, visited the German cities of Nuremberg and Wurzburg earlier in the year. Here’s how she fell in love with the history and culture of these fascinating destinations.

Destination: Germany
Operator/Host: Fred.\ Holidays and Maritim Hotels
Accommodation
(Hotel names/Ship name):
Maritim Hotel Nuremberg, Maritim Hotel Wurzburg
Airline:
Ryanair
Duration: 2 nights

Flights

It was a standard Ryanair flight from Stansted. Security was busy as it was an early morning departure, but Stansted is generally busier now, having taken on the departures and arrivals of Jet2 holidays this year.

Accommodation

Both Maritim Hotels had an excellent location in the cities.

Maritim Nuremberg

Maritim Nuremberg

This hotel was about a five-minute walk from the train station. It is a brilliant location as the train from the airport to the centre is approximately 12 minutes. As you enter, you walk into a lovely large and clean reception area with a large check-in desk with extremely friendly staff.

The rooms were lovely with nice big double beds, floor to ceiling windows, flat screen televisions, excellent wardrobe space and a separate bathroom with a shower over the bath. The hotel was quiet and had black-out curtains, so a peaceful night’s sleep was had.

We did not see too much of the hotel as we were taken straight back out for excursions. Although, I did go down in the morning to use the pool facility, which was quite small but good.

Breakfast was sufficient - continental, cooked, fresh bread, cereal and drinks were all available.

Maritim Wurzburg

Maritim Wurzburg

Again, this hotel is in an excellent location, about a 10-minute walk from the centre but also on the banks of the river. There are fantastic views from the restaurant and the rooms are very similar to the Nuremberg hotel. This one also had leisure facilities, which were of a better size than the Nuremberg one. I would say these Maritim Hotels are very much standard properties and tend to appeal to business travellers. However, their excellent locations make them a great choice for everyone.

What Was Included?

Rothenburg

We had lots of lovely excursions included:

  • Guided tour of Nuremberg Old Town
  • Cookery class to make traditional 'Lebkuchen' (Gingerbread cookies)
  • Guided city tour of Rothenburg ob der Tauber
  • Entrance into the year-round Christmas shop in Rothenburg
  • Visit to the Medieval Crime and Justice Museum
  • Guided tour of the Residence Palace in Wurzburg
  • Guided tour of the Fortress Marienberg in Wurzburg
  • We also had hosted evening meals and lunches throughout

Trip Highlights

Lebkuchen

I had two favourite parts – my first being the cookery class. This is such a good idea for something different to do and would work well if you are travelling with a group of friends or colleagues on a city break or team building trip.

I also enjoyed the city tour of Wurzburg as it is such a beautiful city; it looks like a medieval film set. There is so much history and culture and it was extremely interesting. Having a guide made all the history come to life.

Possible Improvements

There really wasn’t anything I could fault from either Fred.\ Holidays or Maritim. The only one thing most of the group said was that we would have actually liked more time in the Medieval Crime and Justice Museum as it was so interesting and we only ended up having about 20 minutes to dash around it.

Recommendations

I would most certainly recommend the trip or perhaps just a city break within one of the cities, as they all have so much to offer. Whether you are looking for history, culture, shopping or food, they have it all.

If you wanted to do more than one city, it is also extremely easy. The train links are fantastic and very easy to navigate.

I think travelling over the Christmas season would be fantastic to visit the Christmas markets.

Must see? Year-round Christmas shop in Rothenburg
Must do? A guided city tour
Must try? Typical Nuremberg sausage meal
