A Brief Taste Of Brilliant Bermuda

Retail consultant at our travel agents in Ipswich, Gemma Deakin, got to spend five nights on the beautiful island of Bermuda and here is what she got up to….

Destination: Bermuda
Operator/Host: Bermuda Tourist Board
Accommodation
(Hotel names/Ship name):
Rosewood Tucker’s Point
Airline: British Airways
Duration: 5 Nights

Flights

We flew with British Airways and were upgraded to Business Class both ways.

On the outbound flight, I had a seat in the aisle, which was incredibly spacious. I was also offered a copy of the Daily Telegraph and a welcome glass of champagne. The food was lovely; we had a menu to choose from where I selected bread/butter and salmon to start, 5oz rump steak, potatoes and vegetables for main and ice cream to finish.

The drinks were free-flowing and completely complimentary. Headphones, blankets and toiletries were all offered during the flight and there was a very good selection of recent films/TV channels/CDs on the onboard entertainment. It was a 7 and a half hour flight.

On the way home, due to gale force winds, the crew were unable to lift the food onto the aircraft, so no food was offered during the return flight. However, as it was an overnight flight, this wasn’t really a problem. We converted the seats into flat beds and had a snooze. This was a 6 and a half hour journey.

Accommodation

The Rosewood Tucker's Point is a very luxurious property, surrounded by acres of golf courses. It is somewhat far from the beach, however, a shuttle bus is provided to/from the hotel’s beach club (this is currently being renovated).  The building had a lovely, elegant interior with four reception desks.

Check-in was very easy and they take a credit card upon arrival for any refreshments consumed in the room. I was booked into a Manor house, poolside deluxe, sea-view room, which had a queen bed, mini bar (chargeable), flat screen television, bathroom with a roll-top bath, shower and separate toilet. The French doors lead out onto a big terrace with a double sun-lounger, tables and chairs and a couple of steps leading down to the pool. The spa was lovely, with plenty of relaxing treatment rooms, an outdoor sun lounger area with exotic water features and a restful waiting area.

We ate at the restaurant on the second evening and were lucky enough to have our own dining room to accommodate the group. We were given a three-course set menu to select from. This included fish, chowder or mushroom to start, fish or meat for main and chocolate gateaux or cheese and biscuits to finish.

Excursions

During the trip, we had hotel visits at:

Bermuda Naval Dock

We also partook in horse-riding down to the beach, Segwaying around the naval dockyard, golf lessons and a taxi tour of the Capital, Hamilton.

Almost every evening we were taken to a local restaurant to sample the Bermudan delicacies, these restaurants included:

  • The Pickled Onion
  • Swizzle Inn
  • Mad Hatters
  • Barracuda Bar & Grill
  • Wahoo Bistro

I could highly recommend all of them.

We also took a trip down to the Fantasy Caves, which were found back in 1908 with crystal clear water and amazing natural formed stalagmites and stalactites.

Trip Highlights

My favourite part of the trip was Segwaying. This gave us a fun way to explore and a good laugh, especially when someone fell off! The Naval Dockyard is a great place of interest with craft markets, the rum factory, the chance to swim with dolphins and the old prison (which I believe they are going to start doing tours of as from summer 2014).

Possible Improvements

Absolutely nothing could have been improved.

Recommendations

I could highly recommend Bermuda as a trip for luxury-minded couples and even families who enjoy the golf course, the spa or pink sand beaches. Every hotel is uniquely different in location, décor and taste; it’s worthwhile looking into each hotel as some are not as family friendly as others.

I would also be careful if you rely on wheelchair accessibility, as a lot of hotels do not have this.

Additional Comments

It’s important to be aware of the costs in local restaurants and transportation.

You cannot hire a car in Bermuda, so taxi’s or local buses are the only method to get around the islands. An average taxi fare is approximately $6-8 a mile (regardless of having 1 – 5 passengers), which from our hotel to the nearest town (St George) cost approximately $50 per way. A typical three-course meal (taken from Wahoo Bistro) would cost approximately $110 per person, not including drinks. The locals pay around $6 for a loaf of bread and $4 for a 1 pint of milk.
